Volunteer Literacy Tutor Conference

Portland Literacy Council is a co-sponsor of the annual Volunteer Literacy Conference. Our goal is to support Volunteer Literacy Tutors by exchanging ideas, developing new teaching strategies, and honing tutoring skills. Volunteer Literacy Tutors in the Portland Metropolitan area provide one-to-one and group tutoring sessions to adult learners. The literacy skills for students range from preliterate to pre-GED.

Conference presentations and workshops address the needs of both ABE and ESL tutors and students. Workshops are presented, facilitated, or moderated by adult education and ESOL educators, and other professionals and adult literacy advocates. In addition to workshops, participants may attend activities such as a cultural exchange presentation and discussion and tutor discussion session.

Attendees may select from among fifteen workshops, divided among three time slots. The conference includes a catered luncheon for which local students write and present speeches about their learning experiences.
